Why Are My Zoanthids Not Opening?

Zoanthids close when something irritates them. The useful question is not “what miracle additive opens zoas?” but “what changed, and is the problem affecting one polyp, one colony or the entire reef?”

Do not turn one closed colony into six simultaneous adjustments. Diagnose first.

Start with the pattern

The location and timing of closure narrow the possibilities quickly.

1. Ask what changed

Review the previous 24–72 hours. Common triggers include a new light schedule, cleaned pump, moved powerhead, large water change, dosing correction, temperature event, salinity change, nearby coral placement, medication, aerosol or household chemical exposure.

Measure before correcting. Verify temperature and salinity first, then compare alkalinity and nutrients with the colony’s recent normal—not a stranger’s ideal number online.

2. Inspect under white light

Blue lighting hides useful detail. Use a white flashlight or temporarily shift the aquarium spectrum so you can inspect the polyps, connecting mat, frag plug and underside.

Look for nudibranchs, egg spirals, unfamiliar snails, small spider-like animals, vermetid mucus, algae, cyanobacteria, sediment, torn tissue or a fish that returns to pick as soon as you step away.

Do not assume every small animal is a pest. Photograph it, isolate the coral when practical and identify the organism before applying increasingly aggressive treatments.

3. Check flow

Healthy zoa skirts usually move gently. If the colony is pinned in one direction, receiving a narrow jet or collecting sand, adjust the pump angle. If debris remains between polyps, slightly more varied circulation may help.

Make one adjustment and observe. A coral cannot tell you which change worked when light, flow and chemistry are altered together.

4. Check lighting and placement

Recent increases in intensity can keep zoas closed or produce a pale appearance. A shaded colony may stretch or grow slowly. Newly received frags are usually safer starting in modest light and moving upward gradually only after they open consistently.

Photoperiod matters too. More hours are still more light even when the peak intensity stays unchanged.

5. Look for algae and accumulated debris

Algae around the colony can rub tissue, trap sediment and prevent small polyps from opening fully. Improve varied flow and remove loose material gently with aquarium water and appropriate tools.

Avoid scraping blindly across closed polyps. Damaged tissue creates a larger problem than the film you were trying to remove.

6. Consider pests and predators

If closure begins in one area and spreads, inspect repeatedly after lights-out and during the day. Mobile pests can hide in the plug or under the mat, while eggs may survive a dip.

Use a coral dip only when it is appropriate for zoanthids and follow the current label. Do not mix dip products or improvise stronger concentrations. Quarantine, inspection and repeated observation are as important as the first treatment.

7. Assess tissue condition

A closed but intact colony is different from one losing tissue. Escalate your response when the mat is peeling, polyps are dissolving, an unpleasant odor is present or damage is advancing noticeably.

Isolate a rapidly deteriorating frag when practical, prevent contaminated water and tools from contacting other colonies, and verify critical parameters immediately. If you are uncertain, seek help from an experienced coral veterinarian, aquarium professional or trusted local specialist.

What not to do

  • Do not change several parameters at once.
  • Do not repeatedly move the frag every few hours.
  • Do not increase light because the coral is closed without checking whether light caused the closure.
  • Do not add trace elements without a confirmed reason.
  • Do not mix dips or exceed their label directions.
  • Never boil, bake, steam or apply hot water to zoanthids or rock that may contain them.

A simple recovery plan

  1. Verify temperature and salinity.
  2. Compare alkalinity and nutrients with recent measurements.
  3. Inspect the coral and plug under white light.
  4. Correct one confirmed stressor.
  5. Keep placement stable and observe the trend.
  6. Reinspect for pests if improvement stalls.

The goal is not to force the polyps open. It is to remove the reason they are staying closed.
