Torch Coral Care Guide
Torch corals bring long tentacles, bright tips and constant movement to a reef. They are among the most recognizable LPS corals—and among the quickest to demonstrate that “Euphyllia care” is not one interchangeable set of instructions.
A Torch is not a Hammer with longer hair. Give it its own space, flow and acclimation plan.
Torch corals in the hobby
Torch coral usually refers to Euphyllia glabrescens. Hobby listings may also describe geographic origin, tentacle color, tip color or a named aquacultured lineage. Those labels describe the coral being sold; they do not change the need for stable water and careful tissue protection.
Branching colonies make individual heads easy to see, but the fleshy tissue can extend far beyond the skeleton. Inspect the tissue line around every head, not only the tentacle tips.

Use these as starting points. A Torch grown under different lighting, flow and nutrients should be acclimated rather than dropped directly into its theoretical final location.
Lighting
Moderate light is a practical target. Roughly 75–175 PAR works as a broad starting range, with new or unfamiliar colonies beginning toward the lower end.
Too much light too quickly can cause retraction, paling or bleaching. Inadequate light may contribute to darker tissue, slower skeletal growth or reduced extension, although nutrients and flow can produce similar signs. Increase intensity slowly only after the coral is expanding consistently.
Water flow
Torch tentacles should sway in changing directions without being snapped, flattened or held against the skeleton. Strong direct flow can abrade tissue and keep one side retracted. Weak flow allows mucus and debris to collect around the heads.
Aim for moderate, indirect and varied movement. If one head looks worse than the others, check whether the pump stream reaches that branch differently before changing the entire aquarium.
Placement and spacing
Mount the skeleton securely in the lower-to-middle reef and keep the fleshy tissue away from sharp rock. Leave generous space around the full nighttime reach, not merely the compact daytime footprint.
Torch corals can damage nearby LPS, SPS and soft corals. Do not assume every Euphyllia-type coral is safe in direct contact. Hammer, Frogspawn and Torch corals can react differently, and individual colonies do not read compatibility charts.
Feeding
Torch corals are photosynthetic but can accept small meaty foods. Offer appropriately sized mysis, chopped seafood, quality frozen blends or LPS pellets once or twice weekly if the coral responds well.
Reduce strong flow briefly and place food near the mouth without pressing on the tissue. Oversized food may be rejected later and decay between heads. Feeding should support a stable system, not overwhelm it.
Water chemistry and stability
Torch corals build calcium-carbonate skeletons and depend on stable alkalinity, calcium and magnesium. A practical foundation is alkalinity around 7–9 dKH, calcium around 400–450 ppm, magnesium around 1,250–1,400 ppm, temperature around 76–79°F and salinity around 1.025–1.026.
Keep nitrate and phosphate detectable. Abrupt corrections, temperature events and salinity drift often matter more than whether a stable value sits at one edge of a commonly recommended range.
Acclimating a new Torch
- Inspect every head, tissue edge, branch and exposed skeletal area under white light.
- Look for tissue tears, recession, pests, eggs and gelatinous material.
- Follow a trusted quarantine and coral-dip process appropriate for LPS coral.
- Begin under moderate light with indirect flow.
- Secure the skeleton so the tissue cannot strike rockwork.
- Allow the coral to settle before feeding heavily or increasing light.
A shipped Torch may remain partially retracted at first. The important trend is improving extension with intact tissue—not an immediate return to the seller’s photograph.

- Tissue remains full around the top of each corallite
- Mouths stay generally closed outside active feeding
- Color remains stable under consistent lighting
- New skeletal growth or developing heads appear over time
Warning signs
- Fresh white skeleton below a receding tissue line
- One head collapsing while adjacent heads remain extended
- Persistent gaping mouths
- Brown gelatinous material or rapid tissue loss
- Tissue repeatedly striking rock or another coral
- Algae establishing on newly exposed skeleton

Rapid tissue loss can move from one head to another. Avoid sharing contaminated tools or water, verify critical parameters and act on the observed cause rather than applying several untested treatments at once.
Final take
Start Torch corals under moderate light with indirect, varied flow. Protect the tissue, provide more space than looks necessary and keep chemistry steady. Their movement should look relaxed—not like the coral is hanging on during a hurricane.
