Mushroom Coral Care Guide
Mushroom corals can fill shaded rockwork with color, texture and some of the strangest inflation in the reef hobby. Many are forgiving. Collectable bounce mushrooms sometimes add a price tag that makes every temporary wrinkle feel like a financial emergency.
Low maintenance is not the same as no preferences. Most mushrooms want modest light, gentle flow and time to attach.
What reef keepers call mushroom corals
Aquarium “mushrooms” are corallimorphs rather than stony corals. Common hobby groups include smooth Discosoma, textured or hairy Rhodactis and colorful Ricordea. Bounce mushrooms are selected morphs with enlarged vesicles rather than a separate scientific group.
Care overlaps broadly, but individual morphs differ. A smooth red Discosoma, a large hairy Rhodactis and a high-end bounce mushroom should not be assumed to want identical light or flow simply because all three are sold as mushrooms.

These are starting points. Begin unfamiliar mushrooms lower and increase exposure only after they remain attached and normally inflated.
Lighting
Most mushrooms prefer low-to-moderate light. Roughly 30–120 PAR is a useful broad range, with newly shipped or unknown morphs beginning toward the lower end.
A mushroom receiving too much light may remain small, cup away from the fixture, fade or detach. One receiving too little may stretch, darken or expand excessively toward available light. Make gradual changes and remember that blue-heavy spectrum can make fluorescence look dramatically stronger than a balanced daytime view.
Water flow
Use low-to-moderate indirect flow. The disc should move gently without folding over, lifting from the rock or collecting a layer of debris.
Direct flow is a common reason newly placed mushrooms detach. If a specimen repeatedly lets go, reduce the narrow stream and give the foot a protected, textured surface. Do not glue adhesive directly across soft tissue.
Placement and attachment
Lower rockwork, shaded shelves and isolated islands are useful starting locations. Mushrooms can move by detaching or leaving tissue behind, so consider where a colony may spread before placing it against the main structure.
For a loose mushroom, use a shallow container or basket with small pieces of rubble in gentle flow. Once the foot attaches to rubble, the rubble can be mounted securely without gluing the animal itself.
Feeding
Mushrooms are photosynthetic and many thrive without direct feeding. Larger Rhodactis and some Ricordea may accept small portions of mysis, chopped seafood or fine frozen food.
Feed sparingly. A portion should be small enough for the disc to close around without prolonged struggle. Excess food can be stolen, rejected or left to decay beneath an inflated animal.
Nutrients and water stability
Mushrooms often do well in mature reefs with measurable nitrate and phosphate. Extremely low nutrients may contribute to paling or stalled growth, while chronic excess can encourage algae around the attachment surface.
They do not build a heavy stony skeleton, but stable temperature, salinity and overall chemistry still matter. Avoid rapid salinity changes, temperature spikes and large chemistry corrections.
Growth, movement and neighboring corals
Healthy mushrooms can divide, leave small clones behind or spread across nearby rock. Isolate fast-growing morphs if you want to preserve open space around SPS or slower LPS.
Large Rhodactis can shade or irritate neighbors and may capture very small fish or mobile invertebrates in unusual cases. Give expanding specimens room and reassess spacing after lights-out or feeding, when their footprint may change.
Acclimating a new mushroom
- Inspect the disc, mouth, foot, rubble and underside under white light.
- Look for tears, damaged tissue, pests, eggs and decaying areas.
- Use only a quarantine or dip process appropriate for corallimorphs.
- Begin in low-to-moderate light with gentle indirect flow.
- Provide a protected attachment surface if the mushroom is loose.
- Avoid repeated handling while the foot is settling.
New mushrooms may shrink or inflate unevenly after shipping. Improvement in attachment, mouth position and normal daily expansion matters more than immediate size.

Start mushroom corals in modest light with gentle indirect flow and a secure place to attach. Keep nutrients measurable, give spreading morphs boundaries and resist the urge to move an expensive bounce mushroom every time it changes shape.
