Goniopora Coral Care Guide
Goniopora—usually called flowerpot coral—combines a hard stony skeleton with long, flowing polyps that can add a ridiculous amount of movement to a reef.
They were once considered nearly impossible to maintain long term. Better species selection, aquaculture, feeding and modern reef husbandry have improved their record considerably, but Goniopora still deserves more attention than a typical beginner coral.

These are starting points, not magic numbers. A stable aquarium slightly outside a published target is usually preferable to one being constantly adjusted to chase it.
Lighting
Begin with moderate lighting and acclimate the coral gradually. Published recommendations vary considerably because Goniopora includes multiple species and captive strains grown under different conditions.
Around 80–150 PAR is a sensible starting range when the coral’s previous conditions are unknown. Established colonies may adapt above or below that range.
Watch the coral rather than treating a PAR number as a warranty:
- Pale tissue, reduced extension or bleaching can indicate excessive light or overly rapid acclimation.
- Darkening or declining color may occur when lighting is inadequate, although nutrients and other stressors can produce similar symptoms.
- Avoid changing intensity and placement repeatedly. Give the coral time to respond before making another adjustment.
Water flow
Goniopora should sway, not look like it is losing a fight with a pressure washer.
Use indirect, variable flow that moves the polyps gently and prevents debris from collecting around the colony. Strong direct flow can keep the coral retracted or damage its tissue. Too little flow can allow detritus and mucus to accumulate.
If the polyps are violently whipping in one direction, reduce or redirect the flow. If they remain motionless and debris settles between them, increase circulation gradually.
Placement and spacing
Place the coral where its skeleton is secure and its tissue cannot rub against sharp rock. Small mounted frags usually do well on stable lower or middle rockwork. Larger colonies may also be placed on the sandbed if they cannot tip or become buried.
Leave enough room for complete polyp extension. Goniopora can irritate or sting neighboring corals, and different Goniopora varieties should not automatically be assumed compatible with direct contact.
Feeding
Goniopora receives substantial energy from its photosynthetic symbionts, but it can also capture fine suspended food.
Offer a small amount of finely sized coral food once or twice per week:
- Reduce or pause strong circulation.
- Apply a light cloud of food over the extended polyps.
- Avoid blasting the tissue with a feeding tool.
- Restore normal circulation after approximately 10–15 minutes.
- Watch nutrient levels and reduce feeding if uneaten food accumulates.
More food is not automatically better. Consistent light feeding is easier to manage than burying the coral in powder and wondering why phosphate climbed.
Water chemistry and stability
As a stony coral, Goniopora consumes calcium and alkalinity while building its skeleton. Test alkalinity regularly and maintain calcium and magnesium within a stable reef-appropriate range.
Avoid sudden changes in:
- Temperature
- Salinity
- Alkalinity
- Lighting intensity
- Flow
- Nutrient concentration
Detectable nitrate and phosphate are generally preferable to an aggressively stripped system, but elevated nutrients are not a substitute for feeding or stable husbandry.
Acclimation and quarantine
Inspect new Goniopora carefully for tissue recession, damaged skeleton, algae around the base and possible pests. A quarantine system provides the safest place to observe a coral without exposing the display aquarium.
After placement, allow the coral time to settle. Temporary retraction after shipping or relocation is not unusual. Moving it every few hours usually adds another stressor before the first one has passed.

Troubleshooting poor extension
If a Goniopora remains closed, work through the likely causes methodically:
- Verify temperature, salinity and alkalinity.
- Check for strong direct flow or stagnant areas.
- Review recent lighting or placement changes.
- Inspect the tissue edge and underside for recession, damage or pests.
- Check for contact with neighboring corals.
- Review nitrate, phosphate and recent feeding.
- Stop making multiple changes at once and give the coral time to respond.
Polyp extension is useful feedback, but it is not a complete health test. Look at tissue coverage and whether the coral is maintaining flesh around its skeleton.
What about manganese?
Manganese is biologically important to coral photosynthesis, and research in corals and their symbiotic algae supports its role as a trace nutrient. That does not establish a universal Goniopora dosing amount for home aquariums.
Do not dose manganese blindly because a coral stayed closed for a day. Use a tested supplementation method, laboratory analysis or a balanced trace-element program. Trace elements are still trace elements; “more” is not the advanced setting.
Final advice
Start with moderate light, indirect flow, stable chemistry and restrained feeding. Make changes gradually and judge the coral over days rather than minutes.
Goniopora rewards consistency much more reliably than constant intervention.
